Maggie Brooks made the announcement Monday morning during a press conference. Her resounding statement was that "our country can learn a lot from our county." Brooks thanked her friends, family and fellow politicians, including Monroe County GOP Chariman Bill Reilich.
Brooks has served in Monroe County since 1977, and was just recently elected to her third term as Monroe County Executive. She credits her many successes in balanced budgeting and fiscal responsibility as reasons why she is ready for Congress. Under Brooks, county property taxes have been consistently lower than when she first took office. Under her administration, about 15,000 jobs have been created since 2004 and 65,000 have been saved.
The new redistricting lines will make Monroe County its own congressional district. That means Brooks will run against longtime Congresswoman Louise Slaughter.
