In the race for the 18th Congressional District seat, Republican incumbent Aaron Schock is facing Democrat Steve Waterworth.  Our question: Recent reports question whether a traditional four year college is the best fit for most students. Should more be done to come up with alternatives, and if so, what should be done?

Aaron Shock: I don't think a four-year institution is for everyone. I think everyone should have the opportunity if they want to go to a four-year institution. But again, I think it gets into the school counseling, particularly in high school, getting kids experiential learning, getting them to work in real-world experiences. If they want to go into accounting, if they want to go into medicine, get them in that environment so they can decide whether or not this is something they want to do.

Whether they like working in a law firm, whether they like working in a hospital before they go and take four years or six years or eight years of school and the amount of debt that goes with it and then decide, "oh gee, it's not something that I want to do."

Steve Waterworth: There's a series of plumbers and electricians. It can be difficult to find folks who can do electrical work. So there are carpenters, there are any number of jobs like that, that we need people desperately to do that kind of work out there. And there's nothing wrong with it, it's good work.  I've done a little bit of all of that and I think that's something high schools and colleges could probably do a better job of making people aware of it. That's a good occupation.
