Gunfire at W-B Apartment Underscores Problem of Violence

Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County -- Officers combed apartment building 332 ParkView Circle at Sherman Hills Apartment Complex Monday morning shortly after a report of gunfire inside the building. Wilkes-Barre police say only one shot was fired and no one was hit saying the shooting was the result of a domestic dispute.

The gunfire happened at a place that's seen multiple shootings in recent months. "The shootings are not only here, (they're) all over. So you can't stop it," said a woman who lives at Sherman Hills but didn't want to be identified . She believes the violence near her is a microcosm of what's happening in the Diamond City. "You can't blame this on Sherman Hills. There's a lot of victims out there and there's a lot of other shootings going on in Wilkes-Barre."

But Sherman Hills has gained an unwanted reputation of being a site for violence. A man was critically injured in a November shooting at the complex just one month after a police shootout there left another man dead.

The concerned neighbor says a big problem is transients coming to the complex with no roots here. "They come from Jersey, New York, anyone. You don't know who they are." When asked if it concerned her she replied, "Yes, it does."

She is also concerned for her six-year-old grandson she cares for. "I can't keep an eye on him 24/7 I mean. Now with this going on." After three years at Sherman Hills, she says it's time to move someplace safe. The question is where? "I have no idea. There's nowhere safe in Pennsylvania anymore. Everybody should no that. There's nowhere to be safe. "

By Monday evening, the unidentified suspected shooter at Sherman Hills Apartment Complex was still not in custody.
