Scranton, Lackawanna County - After a race that tightened in the weeks leading up to Election Day, U.S. Senator Bob Casey won re-election Tuesday night.

The Scranton-native will now serve Pennsylvania for another six-year term in Washington.

Casey declared victory just before 11:00 PM at the Hilton Hotel in downtown Scranton.

He spoke before hundreds of supporters and volunteers.

Casey spoke for only about ten minutes and was joined by his family on stage.

Casey said Pennsylvania is still in a recovery and the unemployment rate, especially in northeastern Pennsylvania, is still too high.

He says democrats and republicans must work together to move the middle class forward.

"We have a lot of work to do but I have no doubt and I have total confidence in our ability to do that in both parties but it begins tonight," Senator Casey said. "In the aftermath of a tough election, I'm grateful for the vote of confidence that the people of Pennsylvania have given me."

Senator Bob Casey defeated Republican Tom Smith from western Pennsylvania.

Smith spent more than $17 million of his own money in the U.S. Senate battle.
