Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County -- "16 years in Wyoming County," said Marisa Crispell-Barber. That's the experience the Dallas borough woman brings to the Luzerne County Bureau of Elections -- a bureau with no full-time director. Given the vacancy, Wyoming County Commissioners allowed her to help oversee a department that she considers efficient. "I'm just here to help them along, meet deadlines, keep everybody on track."

Right now, that means handling the huge number of recently received voter registration forms. "The last day to register to vote was on Tuesday. We're still processing. Thousands came in. Thousands," said Ms. Crispell-Barber. If registration processing is top priority, a close second is getting out absentee ballots to voters who requested them. "It's a lot of juggling and our office staff -- they're troopers. They are here working non-stop, fingers constantly going," she said.

Some voters showed up at the Luzerne County Bureau of Elections to cast their absentee ballots in person and witness the frenzy of activity behind the scenes. "I'm sure they're very busy. I see a lot of boxes piled up but they seem to run very well, very smoothly and this was an easy process," said Richard Abramowitz of Shavertown.

Fellow absentee voter Paul Evans of Bear Creek Township added, "We found no difficulty in coming down obtaining our ballot and casting our ballot. They're very helpful and there was no problem whatsoever."

Luzerne County features 189 voting precincts compared to just 30 in Wyoming County. Ms.Crispel-Barber is confident that despite a larger number, Luzerne County's election in general will be problem-free. "They already have a system in place. They've given me the rundown of how they've done things in the past and it's worked in the past. I'm not going to change anything. I'm just going to help them with it," she said.
