Milford, Pike County - Milford is a picturesque little borough in Pike County. Resident Debbie Giollo said, "It is wonderful. It's peaceful. It's always been rather secure and you could walk around, you could leave the door open."
But now doors are being closed, and locked. People are worried about criminals. Resident John Fernandez said, "It's getting more than we have ever been used to, that's for sure."
This week two people robbed the More For Less clothing store. The woman working said it was about 4:30 in the afternoon, broad daylight, when two young men walked in with box cutters demanding money. She ran outside while the thieves ransacked her register. Fernandez said, "I think maybe it's something to do with the economy, really what else could it be?"
Christopher Graham runs NWV Hobby Shack. He said he has been busy because he sells security cameras. He blames an influx of out-of-towners for the troubles. He explained, "You see the check cashing places. You see the bars on the windows, the pawn shops; it brings a socio-economic element."
He told us about a business owner who was recently mugged. He said, "A masked assailant came up, roughed her up a little bit, took her lap top and some cash."
Graham is working to start a neighborhood watch and a business group where people can share security ideas.
He is hosting a meeting as the NWV Hobby Shack at six on Thursday night.
