Seventeen games, seventeen wins. The Saint John Neumann Boys basketball team is off to a terrific start, undefeated through the month of January. The players share what makes this team so special.
Richard Allen
Guard
"I think it is our hard work. We are dedicated to win. We just want to keep winning. We don't want to know how it feels to lose. I think that motivates us."
Ryan Reid
Forward
"The teamwork definitely, how we all work together to get the win."
Even with the early success, the head coach of this Single-A team says there is still room for improvement.
Paul Petcavage
Head Coach
"We work on that constantly to say you can get better. One day you are going to go up against a really good team and get exposed for things you don't do well and we can't afford to do that in a stretch run."
Last year the stretch run ended in the second round of the state playoffs. Two years ago this team only won two games. The remarkable turnaround is led by head Coach Paul Petcavage. He and two assistant coaches were players on Neumann's 1972 State Championship team. A living history they hope to repeat.
"So we know what we want, the three of us we are focused and kind of know how to get there and we are trying to get that through to these young men and they are doing a good job of it."
Noah Beiter
Forward
"We're hoping to go into states and go pretty far in that. Anything is possible. We try our best and take one game at a time."
