MOrmina and Penguins Team up to fight prostate Cancer
WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins defenseman Joey Mormina is known as a tough player on the ice. He's never been afraid to drop the gloves if the situation presented itself. Now he's helping with a different kind of fight away from the rink - the fight against prostate cancer.
It's an issue that hits close to home for Mormina, whose father-in-law - Nels Palm - is currently battling the disease.
Mormina has enlisted a few of his Penguins teammates to help raise awareness about prostate cancer prevention and treatment - and to raise a little money to help fight it. During home games this Friday (against Springfield) and Saturday (against Binghamton) fans will be able to donate to the cause by dropping money into buckets at the Penguins raffle table, located behind section 108. There will be five buckets featuring the names of Penguins players - Brian Strait, Zach Sill, Colin McDonald, Ryan Craig and Eric Tangradi. The player who receives the most donated money during the two games has pledged to grow a mustache for the entire month of November.
The contest is a fun way to help spread the word about a decidedly unfunny condition. Prostate cancer will affect one in six men during their lifetimes, and is the second most common form of cancer among men, trailing only skin cancer. Approximately 240,000 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed in the United States this year.
All money raised this weekend will be donated to the American Cancer Society, who's Man to Man program helps men cope with prostate cancer by offering community-based education and support for patients and their family members.
