Connecticut Whale goaltender Chad Johnson stopped 41 shots and 3-of-5 in the shootout to help his team to a 1-0 victory over the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on Sunday at the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.

After 65 minutes of hockey failed to provide the decisive outcome in the contest, the two teams headed to the shootout, each looking to gather their first win of the young season.

The Penguins and Whale traded a pair of goals through the first four rounds, but it would be Jonathan Audy-Marchessault who beat Scott Munroe through the pads to put Connecticut on top in the top half of round five.  Penguins' defenseman Simon Despres' tying effort was sticked aside by Johnson to seal the victory for the Whale.

Wilkes-Barre/Scranton was not without its chances in the game, owning a 41-24 shot advantage and seven power play opportunities, but could not find a way to get the puck past the Connecticut backstop.

Munroe made 24 saves through overtime and was 1-of-4 in the shootout.  The Penguins penalty kill was 4-for-4 on the night.

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins hit the road for the first time this season as they travel to face the Rochester Americans on Thursday, October 13 at 7:05 PM.
