Flood Caused More Than $113 Million In Damages on Area Manufacturers
Hanover Township, Luzerne County--The flood of 2011 wreaked havoc on the manufacturing segment of the local economy and continues to place local workers at risk. Eric Esoda, Executive Director of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Industrial Resource Center, NEPIRC, based in Hanover Township, told Eyewitness News, "The flood destroyed or hampered industries by impacting its equipment, records even I.T. support. In many cases getting restarted has been a major challenge. We surveyed more than 500 manufacturers in Northeastern and Central Pennsylvania and most say they lost major assets and items they need to produce. But by the same token may are using the flood to improve and modernize their equipment." NEPIRC found that most of the businesses they surveyed are saying in the area and have chosen to rebuild. Many businesses were especially hard hit since they are seasonal in nature, such as Milazzo Industries, which was entering it's prime season.
