Wilkes-Barre, Luzerne County -- A couple of dozen retirees spent part of their Friday at the Charles T. Adams Senior Center in downtown Wilkes-Barre. They gathered to socialize, play a game of cards or just relax. They also shared concerns about their health insurance coverage. So many rely on that insurance to help pay for their prescriptions including Tom Mills of Wilkes-Barre. He takes several medications. "Five plus two eye drops." Mary Casterline of Wilkes-Barre talked about her prescription drug needs. "Blood pressure pills I have to take and now I'm on an eye pill but that's cheap. That's only $20 for 120."

Some seniors may not be aware that one or more of their current medications may not be covered by their particular Medicare plan for the next year. That could put many in a precarious predicament. "Well, I can't take it then. Plus I have other medication," said Ms. Casterline. "It would kill them," added Mr. Mills who said, "They need the medicine. If you're over a certain limit and (it costs) too much then you can't get it."

That's where a Pennsylvania program steps in to help. It's called APPRISE. The APPRISE program provides free health care insurance counseling for Medicare recipients. Counselors help older Pennsylvanians select the coverage that best suits their needs and helps them avoid potentially costly insurance mistakes.

The specially trained APPRISE volunteers are scheduled to come to senior citizen centers throughout the area including those under the Luzerne Wyoming Counties Area Agency on Aging Program. Their visits coincide with the Medicare Open Enrollment period from October 15th through December 7th. "I'll be here. I'll enroll in it," said Ms. Casterline.
