Scranton, Lackawanna County - With several weeks of winter still left on the calendar, dozens of people got a helping hand Thursday in Lackawanna County.

Hundreds of coats were given out for free at the Saint Francis of Assisi Soup Kitchen in Scranton.

The coats, along with gloves and scarfs, were collected at local grocery stores and restaurants across the area.

The collection drive was sponsored by the state representatives from Lackawanna County, who include Kevin Haggerty, Marty Flynn and Frank Farina.

"It has been an enormous response," Farina said. "I don't think anybody wants to see anybody in need in northeast Pennsylvania. It makes me proud to live here, call this my home."

This was the second year for the free coat giveaway in Scranton.
