Seven Killed in Christmas Holiday Crashes Investigated by State Police

Harrisburg - Seven people were killed and 315 others were injured in the 1,336 crashes investigated by Pennsylvania State Police during Christmas holiday driving period.

From Dec. 21 through Dec. 25, 2012, State Police investigated a total of 1,336 crashes. Of those crashes, 108 were alcohol-related and involved one fatality. Also, two of the seven people who died in crashes were not wearing seat belts.

Troopers made 348 arrests for driving under the influence and issued 2,152 speeding citations during the holiday period. State police also cited 313 individuals for failure to wear seat belts and issued citations to 37 drivers for failing to restrain children properly in child safety seats.

During last year's Christmas holiday driving period, five people were killed and 169 others were injured in 509 crashes investigated by state police.

The crash numbers cover only those incidents investigated by state police and do not include statistics on crashes to which other law-enforcement agencies responded.
