What's Happening December 29- 30, 2012 Edition

We say goodbye to 2012 and Hello to 2013 this week.  Here are some events to help you welcome the New Year!

December 29th and 30th
The Hudson Model Railroad Club will be holding its 30th Anniversary Open House on Saturday, December 29th and 30th, 2012 from Noon to 5pm. The location is 97 Martin Street, Hudson, PA 18705. Admission to the open house is FREE and parking is FREE as well. Bring the whole family for a fun afternoon and enjoy the sights and sounds of railroading in Northeast PA!


Decemeber 31
NEW YEAR'S EVE GAME TIME CHANGE for the Williamsport Outlaws Hockey Team for Monday, December 31st. The Outlaws will now face off against the Danbury Whalers at 5:05 pm instead of 7:05, as originally scheduled. Start your New Year's Eve night at the Pond at Bowman Field and enjoy a great game of hockey!

Coming Up:

Wyoming Seminary junior Ryan Frania of Wyoming will display his creative works in a variety of mediums in an exhibition titled, "Redesigning Reality," in King's College Widmann Gallery from Monday, Jan. 7, through Friday, Feb. 15.



Belle Reve Senior Living is looking for gently used books to use in a book swap! The book swap will be held Saturday, January 26 from 1-3:30 p.m., and a variety of books are needed for the attendees to trade.
Any gently used books ranging from children's to adult are accepted. Books can be dropped off starting now through the day before the event, January 25.  Books can be brought to Belle Reve, located at 404 East Harford St., Milford, Pa. Come costumed and masked - or simply ready to have fun--at the 72nd annual Wayne Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Mistletoe Ball on January 19, 2013 at Ehrhardt's on the Waterfront in Tafton. The theme this year is Masquerade and proceeds will benefit Wayne Memorial's very youngest patients, the newborns in its New Beginnings Birthing Suites. The event kicks off at 5:30 pm with cocktails and entertainment by the JP Bowersock Jazz Quartet. Dinner follows at 6:30 pm, with dancing afterwards to the live band, Ronnie and the Riff Kings.   Mistletoe tickets are $75 per person. Thinking about those New Year's Resolutions:

Penn State Extension in Pike County will hold the first of 5 weekly sessions of a FREE Quit Smoking Course, January 2, 3:00 - 4:00 PM; Pocono Lake Region Chamber of Commerce Visitors Center, 2512 Route 6, Suite 2, Hawley, PA 18428. The group will meet for 5 consecutive Wednesdays. Pre-registration is required. Nicotine patches available while supplies last. Tobacco Free Northeast PA at Burn Prevention Network is funded by a grant from the pa Department of Health Tobacco Prevention and Control Program.

Learning that you have diabetes can be overwhelming at first. There are many new things to learn and it can be difficult to know where to start. Dining with Diabetes is a program offered by Penn State Extension. It will help persons with Type II diabetes understand some of the most important things they need to know about how to manage their diabetes. Christina Cassilly, R.D., and Nicole McGeehan, M.P.H., CHES, will lead discussions .   Two 4-week programs will be held on: Tuesdays starting January 15, 2013 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. with a follow-up class on April 2 at The Wright Center, 5 South Washington Avenue, Jermyn, PA 18433; or on Fridays starting January 11, 2013 from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. with a follow-up class on April 5, at the Penn State Extension Meeting Room, 200 Adams Avenue, Lower Level, Scranton, PA 18503.
There will be two free informational sessions for those who want to learn more about the program prior to registering on: Friday, January 4, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at the Penn State Extension Meeting Room and Tuesday, January 8, 2013 at 6:00 p.m. at The Wright Center.

Lab tests to measure HbA1c will be offered. Participants will receive a pedometer, exercise DVD, recipes, and more. The cost of the program is $40.00 per person or $55.00 for two family members living in the same household. Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries receive free registration and scholarships are available.
