State Police Investigate Missing Money at Moosic Fire Company

Moosic, Lackawanna County - A volunteer fire company in Lackawanna County is at the center of a state police investigation.

No one is facing criminal charges at this time but the investigation has people in the Moosic-area talking.

Troopers confirmed Wednesday morning that they have opened an investigation into missing money at the Greenwood Hose Company on Birney Avenue in Moosic.

Investigators have not yet said exactly how much money is missing from the fire company.

"I'm shocked, just in shock," Donna Pisano of Moosic said. "I haven't heard anything locally, in the neighborhood or anything."

State police are handling the case at the request of the Moosic Police Department and the Lackawanna County District Attorney's Office, who both gave up jurisdiction in the case.

"It's upsetting. We love, we support the hose company so I'm surprised," Marsha Scottie of Moosic.

News of the investigation is also sparking anger.

"I think it's a shame and whoever did it should pay for it. That's plain and simple," Annette Wickizer of Moosic said.

Many say the volunteers at the Greenwood Hose Company are hard-working and loyal.

"We need our fire departments. It's bad enough they closed the one down on Main Street which I used to belong to as a member," Wickizer said.

As of right now, state police have not said how long their investigation will take. The investigation could take weeks, if not months, because a forensic audit is expected.

"Wow. I hope they get them," Mary Ann Gordon of Moosic said. "A place like that? They're close knit."

Current members of the Greenwood Hose Company declined to comment on the investigation. Efforts to reach a spokesperson for the company was unsuccessful.
