Carbondale, Lackawanna County - Two people were taken to the hospital after they were hit by a telephone pole Monday morning in Lackawanna County.
The bizarre situation had both eyewitnesses and firefighters amazed at the circumstances.
The situation started to play out around 11:00 AM on Dundaff Street in Carbondale.
Firefighters say a plow truck carrying anti-skid material hit a guy wire and that caused a telephone pole to snap and go flying through the air.
The pole hit one man who was walking and landed on a second man.
"One in a million, something like that would happen," eyewitness Bill Houston said. "One in a million, no question about it."
Houston lives just a few feet away from where the situation played out.
He rushed to the scene and heard one of the men crying for help.
"From where it was and it hit the other cable going across, that must have come like a bullet going through," Houston said.
Firefighters and police responded to the scene. They were initially dispatched for a telephone pole hitting two people but admitted they couldn't believe what they saw.
"One guy was unconscious when we got there," firefighter Steve Wright said. "The other guy was just getting up. They were both transported to CMC I believe and they were both conscious when they left the scene."
Neighbors who live along Dundaff Stret are in shock about what happened.
They're hoping the two men are not seriously hurt.
"It's like crazy around here. Wierd things happen all the time right around this area here," Georgia Strackbein said.
The name and condition of the two men injured have not been released.
