Prospective Parents Heartbroken over Russian Adoption Ban

Updated: December 29, 2012
Williamsport, Lycoming County-"Just in the last year alone there has been about a thousand kids placed from Russia in the USA. It was quite a good source for people looking to adopt, especially younger children." Said Attorney Michael Collins on Friday.

Williamsport attorney Michael Collins has handled over two hundred adoption cases in his career. He said Russia's decision to sever ties with the United States will cost families already in the process, thousands of dollars.

"Very very expensive, these parents are dedicated that decide to go internationally because they spend quite a bit of money on travel and other assorted fees."

Collins says families will now be forced to look elsewhere. Even those close to completing the process that often takes years. That includes hopeful parents who have already made the trip overseas.

"Right now it is especially critical for those people who are in Russia. They travel there, they stay there for quite a bit of time and they spend time with the children. There are stories that these people may not be able to leave Russia with these kids." said Collins
