Scranton, Lackawanna County - How much money should the mayor of Scranton make?

That is a question that will soon go to city council for an answer.

Mayor Chris Doherty has proposed increasing the mayor's salary by $30,000 a year. The mayor currently makes $50,000 a year.

If approved, that would jump to $80,000 a year.

The increase would not affect Doherty who said he is not running for re-election.

He says the mayor's salary has not increased in 24 years.

"We took the five mid-size cities in Pennsylvania. We added them all up and divided by five and the number came to $80,000," Doherty said. "Allentown's mayor makes $95,000, Harrisburg and Wilkes-Barre are $80,000, Bethlehem $89,000, Reading $72,000 and Erie $65,000."

City council is expected to debate the pay increase when it is introduced Thursday night.
