The chief says flames got to the roof because the vent's sprinkler system couldn't entirely douse the fire. "The sprinkler inside the vent system did activate and extinguish the bulk of the fire. However, the fire persisted inside the oven, the main oven itself."
Besides the building's sprinkler system putting out the bulk of the fire, fire crews had another distinct advantage -- an ample water supply. The chief credits the way Valmont Industrial Park is designed to handle fire emergencies. "We didn't even have to pump the system in the building because there is just so much water here," said Chief Kostician.
As for what's next for Silgan White Cap Closures, an eventual return to business following one messy fire. "They have a lot of cleanup work to do. There is a lot of water everywhere before they fire back up.," said Chief Kostician.
Eyewitness News tried to get comment from Silgan White Cap Closures, but management declined. Chief Kostician figures it will be a couple of days before the plant is back in business.
