Hazle Township, Luzerne County -- Firefighters with every kind of fire apparatus imaginable filled the parking lot of Silgan White Cap Closures at Valmont Industrial Park Thursday morning. The plant makes tin caps for salsa and dip jars. Somehow, something went wrong with one of the ovens around 9:00 a.m. in the middle of the plant used in the manufacturing process. "The fire did get outside the oven. It started some of the roof decking on the roof which led to an extensive long operation trying to extinguish the roof decking," said Hazle Township Fire & Rescue Company Chief Scott Kostician

The chief says flames got to the roof because the vent's sprinkler system couldn't entirely douse the fire. "The sprinkler inside the vent system did activate and extinguish the bulk of the fire. However, the fire persisted inside the oven, the main oven itself."

Besides the building's sprinkler system putting out the bulk of the fire, fire crews had another distinct advantage -- an ample water supply. The chief credits the way Valmont Industrial Park is designed to handle fire emergencies. "We didn't even have to pump the system in the building because there is just so much water here," said Chief Kostician.

As for what's next for Silgan White Cap Closures, an eventual return to business following one messy fire. "They have a lot of cleanup work to do. There is a lot of water everywhere before they fire back up.," said Chief Kostician.

Eyewitness News tried to get comment from Silgan White Cap Closures, but management declined. Chief Kostician figures it will be a couple of days before the plant is back in business.
