First Lady Susan Corbet Marks Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Harrisburg - Pennsylvania First Lady Susan Corbett, along with former Pennsylvania First Lady Michele Ridge, today joined the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition (PBCC) as it turned the State Capitol's War Veterans Memorial Fountain pink for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The event marked the PBCC's 20th anniversary of raising awareness of breast cancer in Pennsylvania.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which reminds all women of the importance of breast health, the need for self exams, check-ups and mammograms.

"Every day, there are 32 women in Pennsylvania who are diagnosed with breast cancer. In my family, it was my own mother," Mrs. Corbett said. "She is now a two- time survivor of breast cancer and I want to thank the doctor who encouraged her to get her first mammogram."

Mrs. Corbett is the honorary chair of the PA Breast Cancer Coalition. It has been tradition for two decades that Pennsylvania's first lady holds that position with the statewide non-profit organization.

"What an honor it is and has been, working so closely with such talented, committed First Ladies to fight this disease and truly offer hope and healing to survivors and families," said Pat Halpin-Murphy, PBCC founder and president.

"When you see the pink fountain, I want people to remember their mother, sister, daughter, family members and friends and talk to them about preventing breast cancer," Mrs. Corbett said. "The fountain provides hope that you do have a chance to fight this disease and win."
