Another tough start from Jon Musser was compounded by base running mistakes and
defensive miscues as the Crosscutters lost to Mahoning Valley
9-1.
Musser walked five batters in two innings while allowing
two runs. He left with the bases loaded in the third, giving way to Luis
Gonzalez.
Gonzalez got the first three in order to retire the
side, but surrendered five runs over 3.2 innings to drop Williamsport in an even
bigger hole.
Roman Quinn, Larry Greene and Trey Ford were bright
spots for the Cutters. Each finished 2-for-4 with Quinn swiping his fifth base
of the season.
Mahoning Valley took the lead in the second when Jeremy
Lucas and Jairo Kelly drove in runs.
Joe Wendle drove in his first of four runs when he
singled home Kelly in the fourth. The grounder up the middle gave the Scrappers
a 3-0 lead.
The Scrappers broke it open with four runs in the sixth.
Wendle doubled home Kelly and Tyler Naquin, Charlie Valerio brought home Wendle,
and Olmo badly misplayed a ball in right to make it
7-0.
Mahoning Valley tacked on one more in the seventh off of
Zach Cooper, before Yan Carlos Olmo drove in Mitch Walding for the lone Cutter
run of the day.
The Scrappers scored their final run in the eighth as
the Cutters drop to .500 for the first time since game five of the season. They
hold a 7-7 record but remain only two games back of Auburn, who lost to the
Jamestown Jammers.
Williamsport will pick up the bats again tomorrow
against the Scrappers. First pitch is at 7:05.
