The Lehigh Valley IronPigs were swept in four games by the state rival Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees after dropping the finale 3-2 from PNC Field in Moosic, Pa.  Down 3-0 heading into the eighth, the IronPigs scored single runs in the final two innings only to have their rally fall a run short.  In the four-game set with the Yankees, Lehigh Valley was outscored 16-5 and hit a collective .148 against the Scranton pitching staff.  Lehigh Valley will now travel north to Pawtucket, R.I. still in search of their first win in franchise history.
It was not a long afternoon for IronPigs’ starter J.D. Durbin (0-1) who did not complete the fourth inning after throwing 75 pitches and allowing three runs on six hits.  Durbin was touched for a run in the first on an RBI single by former Houston Astros’ outfielder Jason Lane who hit .308 in the series.  Lane would get to Durbin again when he led off the fourth with his second home run of the series to put Scranton on top 2-0.  The Lehigh Valley starter was then chased from the game after giving up doubles to designated hitter Eric Duncan and second baseman Nick Green which put the home team up by three runs.
The IronPigs only mustered three hits off of Yankees’ starter Darrell Rasner who missed most of the 2007 with a fractured index finger.  Rasner (1-0) pitched six shutout innings and did not walk a batter while striking out five to earn his first win of the season.
Lehigh Valley started to show some life in the eighth when they put two men on with one out against Scranton reliever Scott Strickland.  Strickland was able to get second baseman Casey Smith down on strikes but designated hitter Mike Cervenak delivered a two-out RBI single that scored shortstop Gookie Dawkins with the IronPigs’ first run of the game.  Right fielder Valentino Pascucci scored on a passed ball to cut the deficit to 3-2 in the ninth but Yankees’ closer Jose Veras picked up his second save on the series when he struck out left fielder T.J. Bohn to end the game.
Pascucci went 3-for-4 with a double and run scored while centerfielder Brandon Watson recorded a hit in every game over the weekend after a 2-for-4 performance on Sunday.
