ROYALS TO FACE BECKER IN OPENING ROUND OF NCAA TOURNAMENT FRIDAY AT WILLIAMS COLLEGE

The University of Scranton men’s basketball team will take on Becker College (Mass.) in the opening round of the 2011 NCAA Division III championships this Friday, March 4, at Chandler Gymnasium on the campus of Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

The second game of the doubleheader will feature Husson University (21-7) against Williams College (25-2) at 7:30 p.m.  The winners will advance to Saturday’s second-round game at 7:00 p.m.

Becker (23-4) will be making its first NCAA tournament appearance in school history, earning an at-large bid after dropping a 79-65 decision in the championship game of the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) to Elms College at home on Saturday afternoon.  The Hawks had an eight-game winning streak snapped Saturday.

Husson (Bangor, Maine) will be making its second appearance after winning the North Atlantic Conference championship with an 84-73 victory over Lyndon State College (Vt.) at home this past Saturday.

Williams, like Becker, received an at-large bid after dropping a 63-54 decision to Middlebury College in the championship game of the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) tournament Sunday at Chandler Gymnasium.  The Ephs will be making their fifth straight and 12th overall NCAA tournament appearance.

The Royals (20-5) earned an automatic bid by winning the Landmark Conference championship Saturday with an 82-71 victory over Catholic University at the Long Center.  Scranton will be making its 23rd NCAA appearance and its fifth under 10th-year head coach Carl Danzig.

Friday’s meeting will be the first-ever between the Royals and Becker College.  Scranton has also never played either Husson or Williams.
