Family of Duryea Murder Suspect Says He's Mentally Ill

(Friday, April 7) The family of the Duryea man charged with a brutal murder and robbery in California says he`s battling mental illness. Roseville, California police say 27-year-old Eric Minchak used a hammer and a knife to kill a 45-year-old woman at a gas station. They say it was a random murder and he was allegedly trying to steal her money. His family released a statement saying Minchak is battling paranoid schizophrenia and has been suffering from mental problems for several years. They also say he suffered a psychotic episode in January and went to California and shut himself off from his family and the rest of the world.
