Wilkes-Barre Fire Ruled Accidental

(Wednesday, April 5) Investigators thought they had a case of arson on their hands... But today they know it was just some kids who were too scared to tell the truth. This was the scene of Sunday`s fire at the red carpet inn in Wilkes-Barre. Today fire inspectors revealed the two kids who claimed to be eye witnesses - were actually the ones who started it - accidentally. The 11-year-old girl and her 13-year-old brother now admit they were playing with a lighter dropped it on a pile of debris which eventually caught fire. Investigators grew suspicious of the kid`s eye witness accounts because the description sounded a lot like a girl named Wendy. "The little girl stated the two males had black pants on blue and white stripe shirts and they both had red hair, which made us suspicious, and when you look across the street there`s the Wendy`s logo, with the girl with blue and white stripes, red hair," said Assistant Chief Bill Sharksnas. The kids won`t face any charges. The assistant fire chief tells WYOU News that the kids lied at first because they live at the motel, where their mother works and they didn`t want to get her in trouble. The south side of the motel as well as four rooms and the roof were damaged by the fire.
