Shawnee-on-Delaware, Monroe County - This year Peter Cottontail will be able to hop down the ski trail. The recent snow and cold have made it possible for ski slopes to remain open until Easter.
Mike Putera of New Jersey was surprised he could ski on the first day of spring. He smiled, "Conditions are actually really good, some of the best conditions we've had all season."
He and his wife Karen took some time off to hit the slopes and enjoy the fresh snow fall. Karen laughed, "I love being outside. I love the fresh air. I love going fast."
The couple had most of Shanwee Mountain to themselves. Every trail was open. Children's Program Director Robin Manfredi smiled, "This is amazing conditions for the first day of spring."
Manfredi said the late-season snow will help give about 100 seasonal workers a pay check lift. She explained, "We're gonna have a crowded weekend so people are going to be having jobs all weekend. And then we're gonna have another weekend on March 31st. That's gonna mean that everyone can stay here and enjoy their job just a little bit longer."
So while some may prefer a warmer start to spring, the cold helps provide jobs, tourism profits, and for Mike, a little more time to enjoy his favorite season. He laughed, "Snow is always good. I love snow. Except maybe in August then maybe it's not so good."
