Type 2 diabetes is becoming more common due to the rising rates of obesity. Making good food choices, being physically active and monitoring blood glucose levels are important ways in which diabetics can manage their disease.

To help Type 2 diabetics understand and manage their diabetes, Penn State Extension in Lackawanna County in partnership with The Wright Center is offering a program called Dining with Diabetes. The 4- week program will be held on Fridays starting March 1, 2013 through March 22 from 10:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. with a follow-up class on May 31 at The Wright Center, 5 South Washington Avenue, Jermyn, PA 18433.

Each class will include:

Food demonstrations and tasting recipes

Physical activity and ideas to take home

Discussions regarding important information to help you manage your diabetes

In addition, lab tests to measure HbA1c will be offered. Participants will receive a pedometer, exercise DVD, recipes, and more. The cost of the program is $40.00 per person or $55.00 for two family members living in the same household. Medicare and Medicaid beneficiaries receive free registration and scholarships are available.
