Falls Township, Wyoming County - A Wyoming County man put his own safety on the line Thursday morning in order to save his neighbor's pets from a burning home.
The man spotted a fire at a home on Whites Ferry Road in Falls Township near Lake Winola around noon.
He didn't hesitate to take action.
George Yuhas says he was driving in the area and noticed smoke coming from the home.
He was worried his neighbor might have still been inside the burning home.
"When I saw the car, the car bothered me a lot that somebody was home so I was screaming at the top of my lungs trying to either get a neighbor but as you see, they're so far and few between," Yuhas said.
While on the phone with 911, Yuhas used an ax to break open the front door of the burning home.
"First went in, I could see right away what was causing the fire," Yuhas said. "The wood burner was completely engulfed all around the walls by it so you couldn't go to the left at all. I was able to go to the right, yell, I couldn't hear anybody or see anybody in the beds but I couldn't see the dogs either so we came out and shut the door so it wouldn't feed the fire."
Collin Morrison owns the home. He was at work at the time of the fire.
Yuhas was able to rescue one of his dogs but another dog, a yellow lab, was not initally able to make it out of the fire.
Morrison later told Eyewitness News that as firefighters did a final sweep of the building, they were able to find the dog alive in the basement of the home.
Despite what he calls a "miracle," Morrison is now left with almost nothing.
"Everything, everything, everything is gone. I have some clothes at my parent's house and my work clothes so that's what is going to have to get me by for now," Morrison said.
Morrison says he has lived in the home for the last six years and used money he had saved for college to purchase the home.
A state police fire marshal ruled the fire accidental.
