Turnpike Hike

By: Jasmine Brooks
Updated: January 6, 2013
BEAR CREEK, LUZERNE COUNTY-It now costs you more to drive on the Pennsylvania turnpike. The new toll rates are expected to generate millions of dollars in new revenue for this year. Starting today easy pass users are seeing a 2 percent increase. Cash customers are paying 10 percent more. The toll increase, which is expected to generate about 25 million dollars this year, will help address a transportation funding shortfall. It will also fund reconstruction and road widening. E-Z pass rates have been set lower than cash rates since 2011. Turnpike leaders want to encourage drivers to use the electronic option.
