East Stroudsburg, Monroe County - Car sales are reaching some of their highest numbers in four years. Some say it is a sign the economy is improving.

Sam Zudjelovic of Mountainhome bought a vehicle Monday. After putting more than 350,000 on his truck he said it was time for a new one.  He noted, "It's getting old. It's getting up to the mileage so I need a new vehicle."

Sam bought a new car at Halterman's in East Stroudsburg. Sales people say there seems to be a turn around. Salesman Matt Raymond said, "Things are looking up."

More people are buying cars now than in the past few years. Some believe it's because the economy is improving. "It's coming back," said Sam.

Others say it is because people like Sam have pushed their old cars to the max and have no choice but to replace them. Raymond said, "People are more purchasing cars now because of a need as opposed to a want."

Car dealers have also seen a business boost because of Hurricane Sandy. The storm destroyed a lot of vehicles. Raymond added, "We had a lot of people coming here from the cities because you had a lot of Toyota dealers and other dealers there that completely lost inventory."

While things are looking up for car dealers now, sales people say they don't want to get their hopes up too high yet. "Anything can change real quick," said Raymond.

Some financial experts say the so called "fiscal cliff" could derail the apparent auto market recovery.
