Friends of the Poor Dinner Feeds Thousands

Scranton, Lackawanna County - Over one thousand people enjoyed a free Thanksgiving dinner, thanks to the generosity of the community Tuesday night.  It was the 36the annual Friends of the Poor dinner at the Cultural Center in Scranton.

Fifteen hundred people filled the Scranton Cultural Center Tuesday night for the annual Friends of the Poor dinner.  A tradition that started 36 years ago by Sister Adrian Barrett, has grown every year since.

Preparations for the feast start months in advance.  All of the food is donated and then its up to the volunteers to roast 70 turkeys and bake the fixings, to give everyone the chance to celebrate Thanksgiving.

Organizers say every year there are more and more people in our area that need help and thankfully more and more volunteers step up to serve.

After the dinner, volunteers packed up two thousand baskets for needy families with all the fixings to make a Thanksgiving dinner at their home.  Wednesday families will pick those baskets up at the cultural center.
