Stroudsburg, Monroe County - Meals on Wheels volunteers deliver food to people in Monroe County five days a week. Now area chefs are preparing to deliver some financial help. They are getting ready for the 17th annual Pocono Chicken Wing Off Sunday."I'm excited for Sunday! The weather looks like it is going to be fantastic," smiled Monroe County Meals on Wheels Director Mimi Mikels.
Friday the chef at the Shawnee Inn and Golf Resort was working on some spicy Indian-inspired flavors with fresh Shawnee garden ingredients.
Kitchens are busy at about a dozen other area restaurants as well. The menu includes nearly 50 different flavors including Blueberry Jalepeno and Cherry Cola Barbecue. Mikels said,"We have one coming this year called black dragon. I have no idea what that is but it certainly sounds interesting."
There will be about 35,000 wings for you people to sample. Your wing purchases will help feed up to 150 people a week.
The fund raiser usually raises about $12,000 and helps make up for state budget cuts. Mikels noted,"The county hasn't gotten the funding like the county got in previous years so it can't pay for as many people to receive Meals on Wheels as it did in the past."
The money also helps to offset rising food prices. Mikels said,"Food price have increased 25% over the last seven years but our reimbusement from the state hasn't."
The wing off is at Shawnee Mountain Sunday from noon unti four. Admission and parking are free.
Meals on Wheels is also looking for delivery volunteers. If you would like to help call Mikels at 570-424-8794 Monday.
