Jamar Brittingham scored five times and totaled 34 points, setting several school and conference marks, to lead the ninth-ranked Bloomsburg University (1-0) football team to a 42-28 win over CW Post University on Saturday in the season-opener for both teams.

Brittingham scored on runs of 6, 5, 2, 2 and 2 yards and also had two, two-point conversions giving him 34 points for the day. Brittingham’s five touchdown runs tied a school record held by former Harlon Hilll winner Irv Sigler, who honored at halftime of the game on the 10th anniversary of his winning the award as the nation’s top Division II football player, and Mike Johnson, who scored five times back in 1995. His 34 points also broke the school single-game scoring record.

Brittingham’s five rushing touchdowns also gave him 65 for his career setting a new Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference career mark, breaking the record of 63 held by Wesley Cates of California, Pa who played from 1998 to 2001. He also became the PSAC’s all-time career leader in career points scored with 408, breaking the mark of 402 set by Anthony Carfagno who played at East Stroudsburg from 2002 to 2005.

After a scoreless first quarter Brittingham scored on back-to-back possessions on runs of six and five yards to give the Huskies a 12-0 lead after both extra point attempts were blocked.

CW Post, who will become an associate member of the PSAC next year in football and field hockey, got on the board when Anthony Lazarus scored on a one-run run to cap a 71-yard drive making it 12-7 with 5:38 to play in the half.

Brittingham scored his third TD of the half with 43 seconds to play before the break on a two-run plunge, then scored on the two-point conversion to give Bloomsburg a 20-7 lead at the break.

In the third period, quarterback Dan Latorre hit Kyle Ream with a 16-yard scoring pass to make it 27-7, then Brittingham scored on another two run and added the two-point conversion for a 35-7 Bloomsburg lead.

The Pioneers (0-1), got back into the game back-to-back scores. Dominick Dixon caught a nine-yard pass from Nick Georgetti and Josh Amaro had a 45-yard touchdown reception that cut the Bloomsburg lead to 35-21.

However, Brittingham capped his record setting day with a two-yard run with Drew Snyder with adding the extra points to put the Huskies in front 42-21. Lazarus added a six yard run with less than five minutes to play, but that would be the last score of the day.

Brittingham  finished with 22 rushes for 81 yards and his five touchdowns. Latorre picked up where he left off a year ago and was 16 of 20 for a career-best 282 yards and one score.

Defensively, Jeremey Lightner and Rob Biernat each had nine tackles.

For CW Post, Georgetti was 21 of 32 for 250 yards and two touchdowns, while Kurt Ellis led the defense with 11 tackles.

Bloomsburg plays at California, Pa next week in a 5 p.m. start.
