WAYNE COUNTY - Experts have confirmed - it was a tornado that tore through parts of northeastern Pennsylvania Friday night. The funnel cloud left an 18 mile path of destruction from Uniondale to Beach Lake.
It could take Josh Schneider weeks to clean up the mess a tornado left at his home on rude road in Waymart. He said,"I was pretty disappointed. I put a lot of hard work and sweat into this house - so we were pretty disappointed."
Josh and his wife heard a howling wind Friday evening - they grabbed their two young children and ran to the basement.Schneider said,"It was pretty intense. It was pretty intense."
While there they heard a loud crash. They soon learned it was a tree hitting the side of their house.
Just a few miles away on Mount Pleasant Drive Eyewitness News found a scarred hillside littered with broken branches.
And nearby on the Belmont Turnpike Mike Gajda has a big mess on his hands. He said,"It's gonna be probably a month of work here if we keep at it."
The screaming wind ripped his property to pieces. He recalled,"Headwind just blew right through and everything was done in just like two or three minutes with the heavy wind."
Within that few minutes - the tornado tore up land and twisted trees. He said,"I just couldn't believe what a tremendous tremendous wind and what it did."
While the storm wreaked havoc on his land it spared his home. Pleasant Mount Emergency Director Jeff Durante said, "Looking at the extent of the damage - it really is amazing."
Emergency workers told Eyewitness News they're shocked that among all this destruction no one was hurt. Durante said,"We ain't never seen nothing like this before - i mean this is just unbelievable."
The Wayne County Emergency Management Director said he's in talks with the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency to see if state aid will be available to help people pay for the clean up.
He expects to have an answer from the agency on Monday.
