ABINGTON TOWNSHIP, LACKAWANNA COUNTY - A Lackawanna County landmark celebrated a special milestone Thursday afternoon.

More than 100 people packed the lawn of the Waverly Community House. They all came out to celebrate a building which has been the center-piece of their community since 1920.

The Waverly Community House is now 90 years old. It has been a gathering place for many people for years.

"We do everything here from bridge clubs to basketball, summer camps to classical music concerts," Executive Director Maria Wilson said.

People like Sandy Davidock and her daughter know the importance of the Waverly Community House.

"It's so important because it brings people together in such a positive way and they offer so many different things for so many different people," Davidock said.

Right now, the facility's summer camp is just getting underway. Kids from all across Lackawanna County attend.

"I think that the gym is a lot of fun and the kids love going there and they have a lot of fun in there and that's the one place for me that brings back a lot of memories," David Gwyn of Clarks Summit said.

"Every day we're open, we're full with people from the community, from two-year-olds to people all the way up in their 80s and 90s," Wilson said.

To mark the 90th anniversary, community house officials had kids make four special time capsules. They were all presented at Thursday's celebration and will be stored in the clock-tower until the 100th anniversary of the Waverly Community House.
