BUTLER TWP., LUZERNE COUNTY -- The I-Team has uncovered new information about an assault of a Butler Township baby.

Charges have been approved for the assault of a 17-month old last summer. A relative of the baby talked with I-Team reporter Mike Trim.

According to Butler Township police, aggravated assault charges have been approved but an arrest hasn't been made.  A family member of the baby told the I-Team it's been hard getting information after the alleged assault of the 17-month-old last July.

But on Tuesday, we talked with the Butler Township police chief Charles Altmiller who said, "The district attorney's office has approved charges of aggravated assault and that's as far as we've gone right now."

The family member, who doesn’t want to be identified said, "Thank god the I-Team stepped in and they pursued it for me and now we seem to be getting the wheels rolling and someone's going to be arrested for it."

The I-Team has learned the investigation centers around a juvenile suspect, but a name hasn't been released. Butler Township police originally called this a sexual assault case, but no sex related charges have been approved.

Police say the assault happened on July 18th at a home in Drums. The assault was so bad investigators say the baby had to have surgery.

The baby's family member says an aggravated assault charge isn't enough. "My thoughts are because of the age he's not being charged with a more serious crime and that he's going to be able to be around children and babies and do this again," said the family member.

According to this family member, the baby is two now and is showing signs of recovery. The I-Team reached out to the district attorney's office but we were told at this point, no official comment can be made on this case.
