New, Tougher Drug Law In Effect 2/15/05

Updated: January 25, 2007
Drug dealers in the state will receive stiffer sentencing with new legislation targeting dealers who carry guns. It`s called Act 225 of 2004. The legislation states if you`re caught with a gun during an incident that leads to a conviction of selling drugs, you`ll get a minimum 5 years behind bars. Drug trafficking usually carries a 15 year sentence, now the judge could tack on another 5 years if that person has a gun on him. Law enforcement officials tell WBRE 28 news the new, tougher sentences should send a stern message to drug dealers. The new law went into effect January 29th.
