A well known family in the Poconos is providing relief in Thailand. That family, the Kirkwoods, own the Shawnee Inn and Resort. Their son lives in Puhket and is in the center of the tsunami recovery effort. WBRE 28News reporter Tim Cassidy spoke with his dad today. Charlie Kirkwood has been counting his blessings since the day after Christmas. His son Peter was home in the Poconos when the deadly tsunami hit. "It`s just a miracle he was here for Christmas with Liz the fact that our son and daughter-in-law were right in our own house is very reassuring for us." But they started to see the devastating images on tv... Charlie Kirkwood lived in Thailand years ago. His wife Ginny headed up the peace corps. "Not only do I have business affiliates, friends, there we just have lot lots of good friends and this tragedy is more than just an abstraction for us." Especially since his son and daughter in law are now back there helping out. "One of the things Peter will do is translate because if you are an American trying to find your son your dealing with Thai officials in a small provincial town." The Kirkwoods are taking up a collection to aid in the relief effort not only because their son is there but because the tragic stories we`re all hearing are personal for this family. "I have one friend who was snorkeling. It was Sunday morning they were snorkleing and their 3 year old daughter swept out to sea. They never see her again I mean that it gets ya." The Kirkwoods are collecting donations to send relief money to Thailand. If you would like to help, click on the provided link.
