  • PA Green: New & Improved Batteries
    Reported by: Kristi Capel

    Monday, Feb 9, 2009 @05:25pm EST

A small company in America's heartland may have a big impact on drivers everywhere. It's called Firefly Energy and it's working to revolutionize batteries. Firefly Energy calls Peoria, Illinois home. Its employees are hard at work creating the next generation batteries. They're designed to run twice as long and hold three times more power than traditional batteries. Mil Ovan said, "To see it grow from 3 people to really making stuff now, batteries that are going to make a difference." So what's the secret? It starts with foam. The heart of firefly batteries is carbon foam. Traditional batteries are 100% lead. Less lead allows the battery to run longer and is safer for the environment. Firefly got its start developing commercial batteries for trucks. Its new technology allows truckers to use battery power for things like air conditioning and lights. That saves money on fuel and is good for mother earth. "Car companies have been all chasing us because they see that they need to further electrify their vehicles. There's a range of products we'll enable from cars to trucks to lawnmowers where you don't have to rely on internal combustion engines," said Ovan. Firefly's goal is to produce 100% lead-free batteries by 2015.
