Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers outlasted the No. 6 seed Green Bay Blizzard,
72-67, to win the American Conference Championship Saturday night in front of
5,863 fans at Wachovia Arena.
Win the victory, the Pioneers (16-3) earned the right to advance to the 2009 ArenaCup Championship game to be played next Saturday, August 22, at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas. QB Ryan Vena was razor sharp for Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, completing 15-of-19 passes for 331 yards and a game-high eight touchdowns. Vena also scored on a 11-yard run in the third quarter. Four different players
caught TD passes for the Pioneers. Rich Musinski led the group with four TDs on
five receptions for 128 yards. J.J. Outlaw (5-116-2 TDs), Irving Campbell and FB
Kirby Griffin also caught touchdowns. Griffin added a TD rush as well. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton scored on its first 11 possessions of the game (10 TDs, 1 FG) before running out the final seconds to end the game. Green Bay (12-7) gave the Pioneers all they could handle. The Blizzard scored touchdowns on 10 of their 11 possessions overall. QB Gino Guidugli threw seven TD passes and ran for two in the contest. Guidugli completed 28-of-50 passes for a game-high 377 yards. Anthony Crissinger-Hill led all receivers with 11 catches for 192 yards, both game-highs. Crissinger-Hill and Nate Forse (9-109) each had two touchdown receptions. WR/LB Robert Garth also scored twice via a touchdown catch and a touchdown run. |
