Thursday, Jul 23, 2009 @06:04pm EDT A Scranton women turned herself into police Thursday on felony child neglect charges.
Edna Burgette housed foreign exchange students. Since our I-Team investigation into her household, charges have mounted against the 69-year-old woman. Police couldn't find Burgette Wednesday when a warrant was issued for her arrest. But Thursday she walked in to the Lackawanna County District Attorney's office ready to face the charges against her. She didn't say anything to our cameras in Scranton or at her arraignment in Carbondale. Burgette is charged with neglecting five teenage foreign exchange students. Burgette's defense attorney Chris Osborne said, “They're very serious charges, we understand that but Edna intends to fight these charges and, you know, we'll answer when the times' appropriate." The I-Team exposed Burgette's Scranton home used to house foreign exchange students. Dog feces were everywhere. After our first story city officials condemned the home. Burgette worked for Aspect, a company that paid her for housing the students. Aspect is now under investigation by the state department, all after our I-Team investigation. A warrant was issued for Burgette Wednesday. Detectives raided a home in where they believed she may have been hiding. But Burgette was in Stroudsburg. "She had a daughter in Stroudsburg and asked me if it would be ok if she went there and I said that's fine that she went there and when an indictment comes down we would be here," said Osborne. Burgette was freed on $25,000 bail after her arraignment. |
