  • Trooper Killed, Another Wounded in Pocono Shootout
    Reported by: Eyewitness News

    Monday, Jun 8, 2009 @06:30pm EDT

    Trooper Killed; 1 Wounded
COOLBAUGH TWP., MONROE COUNTY- Two Pennsylvania State Troopers from the Swiftwater barracks were shot after a high speed chase.

Trooper Joshua Miller, 34, was shot twice and died.  Trooper Robert Lombardo, age 35, was shot near the shoulder and was released from the hospital Monday afternoon.  Both troopers are from the Pittston area of Luzerne County.

The man allegedly behind the shootings was also killed.  He's identified as 31-year-old Daniel Autenrieth from Palmer, Northampton County. "An individual embroiled in a domestic dispute for some reason chose to escalate the violence, and it ended with a hero losing his life, a wife losing her husband, and three children losing a loving father," said PA State Police Commissioner Colonel Frank Pawlowski.

The shootout happened on Route 611 in Tobyhanna near the intersection with Route 423 just after 8:30 P.M.  Police from at least five area agencies were involved in the incident, which began in Northampton County and ended in Coolbaugh Township.

Eyewitness News has learned the ordeal began in Nazareth, Northampton County when police were called to enforce a P.F.A., or Protection From Abuse order at 432 Union Street.

That's when Daniel Autenrieth took his 9-year-old son at gunpoint and led police on a 40-mile chase along Route 191 into Monroe County.  Stroud Area Regional Police joined the pursuit through Stroudsburg until it was taken over by State Police and Pocono Mountain Regional Police from Mt. Pocono into Tobyhanna.

The chase ended on Route 611 near Route 423 when police forced him to stop.  When the two troopers approached Autenrieth's car he fired three shots, hitting the two troopers.  Miller was struck twice, including once near the throat.  Lombardo was hit just below the shoulder.

Both troopers returned fire, striking Autenrieth with 8 shots.  He died at the scene.  Other officers were able to get the 9-year-old boy out of the car.  He was not hurt.  "As the shots were being fired the child was pulled out. The first rounds by the child's father had already taken place and I'm sure that came into play with the troopers' actions. They seemed to have to be much more careful with the direction of their gunfire as opposed to the subject was being with his," said PSP Lt. Robert Bartal.

Trooper Miller was taken by lifeflight to Lehigh Valley where he died.  Trooper Lombardo was taken to Scranton CMC with a gunshot wound near his left arm.  He was released early Monday afternoon.

An online memorial for Trooper Joshua Miller has already been created. You can leave a message there for Miller's family and friends.  Just click here.
