Monday, Feb 2, 2009 @04:21pm EST This month has been painful for many workers.
Major layoffs and store closings mean tough times are still ahead.
First bad news out of Monroe County. Roadway Express will close most of its Tannersville terminal by the end of the month. 143 workers will be either eliminated or transferred. A spokesman for YRC - which owns Roadway - blames the season and the economy. In Schuylkill County, Precisionaire Industries announced it will not rebuild its plant in Auburn. That leaves 135 workers jobless. The heating and air conditioning maker has been closed since a fire in September. More job losses in Luzerne county. Intermetro Industries has let 68 people go since November. They blame the sluggish economy. The Wilkes-Barre business makes storage and transport containers. Mattress Man closed shop after nearly a quarter century. It was once touted as the “largest Sealy sleep shop in northeastern Pennsylvania.” The chain had at least 6 locations in our area. LaFratte's Restaurant in Pittston also shut down in January. The family-owned restaurant on main street got it's start nearby more than fifty years ago. The family will continue the catering business but says the restaurant just isn't viable right now. There's good news too out of Pike County. Dingman’s Flowers has recently expanded and moved to a larger space at the Delaware Ridge Shops on Route 739 in Dingman’s Ferry. ![]() |
