They call it the Kids' Outdoor Amazon Adventure Day Camp. And this camp definitely lives up to its billing. Twelve-year-old Perri Harmon, of Bloomsburg, said, "I just love the outdoors and doing stuff like this that challenges me.” Put away the computer and video games. For a full week, these 12 kids are experiencing the outdoors in a whole new way. It's all thanks to the QUEST program at Bloomsburg University. B.U. Senior Tabitha Chlubicki explained, "We try to promote them to work as a group and promote everyone else around them and encourage them to go further. Hopefully they take that with them and encourage their friends and teammates in other sports that they do in the future." Chlubicki designed the camp. She's now managing it in its first year. From rock walls and hiking to kayaking and zip lines, there's plenty to do here. Brett Simpson, Associate Director of the QUEST program, noted, "There's a big movement now talking about "nature deficit disorder," and having kids inside too much and the impact of that. So our goal is to get kids back outside and get them reacquainted with being outdoors." And while the kids certainly enjoy all the outdoor activities, there's an underlying goal of teaching them to appreciate and take care of the environment where they live. So the kids are schooled on things like the dangers of littering and the importance of recycling. Chlubicki added, "Considering that most of our activities deal with the outdoors, it's really important to teach them to treat them properly or else they won't be there in the future." It's a message the kids seem to be getting, while having a whole lot of fun along the way. Perri Harmon explained, "You make a lot of new friends here. You know everybody's name the first day and hang out with them. It's really fun.” There are four week-long QUEST camps at Bloom. This year's camps are all sold out. But we're told they will be expanding the number of campers for next year. ![]() |
