![]() When you walk into an antique store, it is more adventure than shopping. There is no telling what you will discover - and it could be something that you will cherish for years to come. Northeastern PA is known for its antique stores, visitors come from far and wide to find treasures in our wonderful shops. There is a reason why so many people use the word “treasure” when referring to antiques. The word describes what makes antiquing like no other shopping. These are not items that are mass produced and found in hundreds of stores. The antique shopper’s search is not motivated to fill a specific need, it is shopping for shopping’s sake - the thrill of the hunt. And it is the charm of the treasures themselves that motivate the adventure. Here are some great general tips from expert antique shoppers: Ask around: If you like a shop, ask the owner what other shops are similar in the area, as most are glad to refer you. Single owner shops offer more personal service. You may be able to learn more about the history of a piece, negotiate a price more easily and even find more selection. Bring along a flashlight, measuring tape. And bring cash or a checkbook. When negotiating a price, never ask for a lower price because it’s ‘scratched’ or has a ‘wobbly leg.’ Demeaning remarks about the item are in poor taste, will offend the staff - and there goes your deal. Simply ask if they will take a certain price that you are willing to pay, and then be ready to pay if they accept. |
