Reported by: Jeff Chirico Thursday, Oct 22, 2009 @11:30pm EDT WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY --When you walk through stores, it's easy to tell October is breast cancer awareness month.
Countless products are packaged in pink.
You may think it means the manufacturer is giving money to that cause.
But tonight, the I-Team investigates whether there's really green behind that pink.
There's pink candy. Tissues with pink ribbons. Even a pink Snuggie. The color for breast cancer awareness has become big business. Mia Weaver of Wilkes-Barre says “I'd buy the one that has pink so I can support the organization. " Eliza Ngie of Wilkes-Barre "When you see pink you think your money is going to them, helping them." But is it? Dolly Woody of Susan G. Komen For The Cure says “I'm sure like anything else, people can capitalize on an opportunity." The I-Team went undercover at a major retailer. We found plenty of pink products --from lollipops to small appliances. But whether proceeds from their sale is really helping breast cancer charities isn't always clear. Woody says "if the product says it will go to breast cancer research, where? Who will get the research dollars? On these tissues with pink ribbons, there's no mention if the maker is giving any money to a charity. Weaver says "that's very clever. I would never think that. I would think it goes to Susan Komen cure." And even if the label lists a charity --do more research. Hershey says it contributed to the young survival coalition. But the Better Business Bureau website says it cannot determine if the non-profit meets it's standards, because the charity does not release it's financial information. We found two breast cancer organiztions that get the BBB's Wise Giving Alliance Seal. The National Breast Cancer Foundation and Susan G. Komen For The Cure. Information that can help you determine how best to spend your donation dollars. “I think you should think before you pink.” To review reports on charities check out the Better Business Bureau Charity Seal Program go to www.give.org. ![]() |
