Many people are putting off a trip to the mechanic because of budget restraints, but experts say neglecting your vehicle could end up costing you more money in the long run. Now, during the rest of October, you can get a 40-point car check from AAA for free.

Cathy Rossi of AAA Mid-Atlantic says, "We know most people are keeping cars longer. Not doing regular maintenance why? To save money."

AAA Auto Expert John Ryder warns, "That's what's going to get a lot of people in trouble."

For example, Ryder says a wiper without a blade could scratch the windshield and lead to a failed inspection. So it makes more sense to go out and get a blade for $24 rather than taking a chance on spending $250 for a new windshield.

Another critical area to check is the tires. And you can do it for one cent. Put a penny in the treads. If it covers Lincoln's head, you're OK. But if you can see his head and hair, your tires need to be replaced.

The experts also check tire pressure. They suggest motorists do it themselves regularly. A chart on the driver's side doorjam tell you how much to fill it.

Rossi says, "We're giving you a report card on your vehicle so you have an objective view point that says this is what needs to be done. Take that form into a repair facility."

You can get free 40-point checks throughout the month of October at AAA-approved shops.
