Reported by: Eyewitness News Consumer Unit Tuesday, Oct 13, 2009 @06:21pm EDT We're all looking for ways to cut down on energy costs these days.
One idea is to add tint to your home windows.
It can keep your house cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter.
And the government is offering an incentive.
Eyewitness News consumer reporter Jeff Chirico has our Angie's List Report.
Most homeowners spend about 60-percent of their total energy bill on heating and cooling. Experts say you could cut down on that cost -- by tinting your home windows. Angie Hicks says “many people think of getting window tinting for their cars to keep the harmful sun rays out to keep their car cool, but you can also do this in your house and it can have the same affect and it can help in both the summer and the winter by keeping the sun out of your house." It reduces both glare and heat, slashing your energy costs. And it can be clear -- so you don't even know it's there. Hicks says "when you're thinking about window tinting, you don't have to do all the windows. Think about the areas of your house - maybe windows that face the west, for example, that are most susceptible to the sun are ones that you really want to consider" But what about the cost? Professionals will charge about 7 to 12 dollars per square foot for installation. And do-it-yourselfers can get it done for more than half that price. Also -- in 2009 -- you can take advantage of even more savings. Hicks says "the federal government is offering a tax credit on the purchase of window film up to 30% of the cost of the film - up to $1500 in total credit." In addition to the savings -- you'll also have less fading on your drapes, furniture and carpet. For more information on Angie’s List go to www.angieslist.com ![]() |
