Reported by: Andy Mehalshick Wednesday, Sep 30, 2009 @06:00pm EDT DUPONT, LUZERNE COUNTY -- Where's the money? That's the question many people in Dupont are asking. Money is missing from Dupont's volunteer fire department in Luzerne County.
State police confirm they are investigating. Sources close to the case tell the I-Team about the possible theft of at least $50,000. The Dupont Volunteer Fire Company is a small department in a small town. But it has a big problem - money is missing, a lot of money. The investigation began about a month ago. The police chief says several fire company officials came to his office and said they have a problem - that money may have been stolen. They also brought along financial records. The chief called in the state police, to avoid any possible conflict of interest. The state police did confirm the investigation but will not say anything more than that. Sources close to the case tell the I-Team that at least $50,000, and possibly more, is unaccounted for. Eyewitness News did talk with several fire company members who said they could not comment. But word of the investigation is spreading through town and people are talking. Dominick Morreale said, "Honestly I'm not shocked. It's kind of a shame money is going missing, especially with the economy the way it is. It's a shameful thing because it's such a small town, everybody knows everybody. Everybody feels betrayed!" The I-Team spoke to a fire company member who did not want to be identified. He said he believes the missing money involved state grants and not money that was collected through fundraisers. |
