Reported by: Jeff Chirico Wednesday, Sep 23, 2009 @05:28pm EDT STROUDSBURG, MONROE COUNTY --Her victims call her a predator.
Our cameras were rolling as police arrested the target of an I-Team investigation.
We first warned you about Shirley Matthews last month.
Detectives say she promised to help homeowners avoid foreclosure.
But she just took their money instead.
Consumer and I-Team reporter Jeff Chirico has the story you'll only see on WBRE.
Three homeowners say they paid her thousands of dollars expecting she'd negotiate lower mortgage payments and pass that money on to their lenders. Instead they say she left them deeper in debt. "Do you have any remorse for taking money from people? Taking what money? This man hasn't paid his mortgage." Shirley Matthews of New Jersey smiles and jokes as our camera follows her on a smoke break. "Put that camera away. My pastor might be seeing me smoke." But Matthews has bigger things to worry about. She's in Stroudsburg to be sentenced for stealing from this man, Dennis Cardiche of Marshalls Creek. “As far as I'm concerned she has no compassion. She's a predator." Authorities say Matthews found his name on the county's foreclosure list and convinced him she could save his home. Eric Kerchner, a Monroe County detective says "she was supposed to forward ten thousand dollars to mortgage company help him refinance. She kept ten thousand dollars and never forwarded it to mortgage company." Gary Hackling of Tunkhannock says she did the same thing to him. "I did nothing wrong. I saved his house. I charged him for the service. If he would want his money back then he would have filed something in civil court. Evidently he doesn't want his money back." But authorities don't believe her. And minutes after leaving Monroe County Court --Wyoming County detectives handcuff her. Hackling says “satisfaction. Satisfaction. But I hope she in turn justice is served and she pays for what she's done to me and god knows how many other people she's done it to." As Matthews is led out of the courthouse, her demeanor changes. "You don't look so happy now? I'm still free. I have a god. I am free." Matthews was arrested today on four felony charges including theft by deception and fraudulent business practices. As for the conviction in Monroe County -- the judge gave her one month to pay back her victim. And then could sentence her to years in prison.
